THINKING OF USING 72-76MHz EQUIPMENT FOR TRANSLATION?
We recently received a complaint from the FCC stating that we were promoting the use of 72-76MHz equipment for language translation/interpretation. They required us to stop suggesting that this is an acceptable use for this kind of equipment.
The FCC's regulations require that 72-76MHz systems are used only for auditory assistance to a handicapped person or persons. The FCC interprets 'handicapped person' to be someone with a medical condition, and they do not count difficulty speaking English to be a 'handicap' in that sense.
Of course, the FCC's intentions in this area are honorable - they want to make sure that handicapped people are able to get the help they need, and we would not want to do anything to undermine help to the handicapped.
But we would like to point out that the power of the equipment we sell is miniscule (and that power is controlled by the FCC): The furthest that a 72MHz band transmitter can reach is 1000 feet, if it is outdoors with no obstructions (which is very rare), and many have a much shorter range.
All of our transmitters have undergone a very stringent FCC-controlled testing process to make sure they do not cause interference.
So, we do not suggest that you buy 72-76 MHz FM equipment for the purpose of translation or interpretation. However, we believe we are correct in saying that many other organizations in this country do use such equipment for this purpose.
We are combining forces with several leading players in the industry to campaign for a change in the law to allow these systems to be promoted for transaltion use.
If you have any more questions about this, feel free to call.
